How to calculate forex position size

Start with the amount you are willing to lose if your stop is reached. For a hypothetical $2,000 account at 1% risk, the planned risk budget is $20. Increasing the distance to your stop usually means decreasing your position size.

Worked EUR/USD example

At a 40-pip stop and an approximate $10 pip value for one standard lot in a USD-denominated account, the illustrative calculation is $20 divided by (40 × $10), or 0.05 standard lots. Pip values depend on instrument and account currency; transaction fees and slippage also matter.
